Ooops, then I am ashamed too. And I even read a recent translation of Beowulf not too long ago. At least I know where the name Gothmog comes from.

The Shamus Heaney tranlation is fantastic. I have read it a dozen times.

I have even more reason to be ashamed, because I haven't yet read Beowulf at all. It is
on my list of things I should read some day, of course, but that list is growing every day.
Thanks to Dann for his translation recommendation! I'd like to try reading it in the
untranslated version, but it would probably be a bit too difficult.

"Gothmog" is the name of the Lord of the Balrogs in the book "Silmarillion" by
J.R.R. Tolkien. If you wonder what a balrog is, read the Lord of the Rings or
watch Peter Jackson's movies. :-)
I'm a Tolkien fan and a mythology addict, and it from the current discussion it
seems that I am not the only person here with such interests.

Hey Tord,
I read the LOTR trilogy when I was 15, which has been awhile (I also read
the "Silmarillion" at about the same time). More recently, I did see
the movies and the balrog scenes were especially well done, but of course
Gothmog isn't mentioned in the movies. So, if "Gothmog" is the Lord of
the Balrogs (and I'm assuming one tough cookie) then your engines recent
successes seems more natural!
cheers,

Actually there is a character named Gothmog in LotR as well: "The lieutenant
of Minas Morgul", which has a brief appearance in the battle of the Pelennor
fields. He didn't appear in the RotK movie, but perhaps he will in the extended
edition.
Rather tough, but not unbeatable. He was killed by Glorfindel, whom you might
remember from LotR.
Well, I feel that there hasn't been much progress in the last couple of months. I am
already working on a new engine with a new name, and hope to have more success
this time. :-)

So that the playing field will be more equal, might I suggest the name
"Daisy" or perhaps "Bambi", (but *not* "Lamb" as "LambChop" is too tough
and that name may not have the desired effect!) ;-)

I spelled his name wrong (in case anyone is looking for it). Seamus Heaney is the correct spelling.

Don't feel bad about not knowing the name.
Everyone who designs a logo for Beowulf draws a wolf in the picture. There's no wolf in the Beowulf poem.
Beowulf is a legendary guy with enourmous strength (e.g. 'the grip of ten men')
He does battle with an evil monster named Grendel (and later Grendels's mother) to save a land across the sea from where he lives from the monster's raids.
I like that "olden days" type folklore and tales of chivalry -- that sort of thing. Since Colin is from England, I talked him into the name "Beowulf."
