No, that's incorrect Marcus, the engine will use the first one it finds in it's directory/folder. I over-wrote the one distributed with Gothmog with one from another chess engine's directory/folder and now it works fine.
This would be fine, Marcus... but some engines won't work with the latest version of cygwin.dll (eg : SmallPotato).

Yes that is what I was saying, you can't have two different cygwin1.dll in use at the same time. So if another application is already using one, and it is different from the one in Gothmog's directory then Gothmog won't work when it starts up. So I think if you replaced the other one with the one that came with Gothmog it would probably also work. I doubt Tord is distributing a cygwin1.dll that doesn't work with his engine.
Marcus
First off, don't confuse "cygwin.dll" with "cygwin1.dll". We are talking about "cygwin1.dll".
I just keep one copy in my c:\windows\system32 folder on my path, and that's it. Any other cygwin1.dll gets sent to Recycle.bin. I keep the latest cygwin1.dll that I find, and right now it is one from April 30, 2004. I think I found it through a google search. Here is a link:

Yes Norm, I should have typed "cygwin1.dll"... Try to run some games with SmallPotato or Muriel running the las cygwin1.dll, and look what happens...

Hi Olivier, what will happen, will they refuse to play or even more
nasty will they produce faulty games?
I have seen lots of cygwin problems through the past and always keep
the cygwins delivered with the programs. From time to time though
I had replaced most of my cygwins (especially the WB one) by the
same newer one for all.
Best regards,
Günther
