Hi karo,

it should be possible with Scid:

1. set the correct path to your book/books with "Options->Books Directory"
2. hit "Tools->Book Tuning" and have fun tuning (change percentages and/or incorporate new lines manually and set the value for playing probability then).

I think it's not possible to do this with a pgn file - you have to do it manually, neither can this be done through commandline with polyglot as it is, at least the man page of polyglot doesn't suggest it.

I understood your post as you would like to tune a book, which means there must be one already. Obviously I'm wrong here.
Now then: Polyglot is responsible for making books. It's a very nice commandline tool and the documentation is excellent. If you're on Linux/Unix make sure to check out the man page, if you're using Windows, then there must be a Readme somewhere (if not, see:
http://wbec-ridderkerk.nl/html/details1/PolyGlot.html
and for download:
http://www.geenvis.net/pg.html
?Don't know , whether it's the newest version?

for details).

The Book.bin can then, as described by me above, of course tuned/expanded in Scid.

Edit:

Some features to enhance the tuning of a book file are in Scid Version >3.6.26 only (would be 3.7 then). So if you're using Debian stable for example, you're out of luck. It's in Testing though.

karo,

under the the small window (with Book.bin) you have three buttons - the first one
has to be clicked (with left mouse) to add a move. There should be how-
ever some sort of message on that button, which is missing here.

As it seems you're using windows, make sure to check out the new version:
4.1 or at least don't use Scid <3.6.7!

If upgrading doesn't help you here, i would suggest writing a bug report or
try to get in contact with the participants/maintainer of the project.

When tuning (like Alex said, you already must have a book when tuning) a book with SCID, as far as I know you can not add "a line" to the book. What you can do is add a move with a weight.

When I tune ( I have not in three months), I have several Windows opened:
-The book tuning tool, the engine analizing window, and of course the board window. You need to be at a certain position, this can be accomplished by manually making all the moves to go to that position, or by opening a PGN file, if this file has more than one game, then you need to select the game and load it, once this particular game is loaded you use the forward arrow to get to the desire position. Once you are in the position you want, start the engine analize function. How deep to go is up to you and your hardware, I usally don't go less than 21. Keep in mind that the by default (and I don't know if this default can be change) the score is shown from whites perspective. Once you know what new move you want to add and how much weight give to it, click the "ADD" button and add it, if the move was already there then just change the weight.

This is how I do it and I am sure every one of us might do it differently. My best suggestion is to play with SCID, and continue playing with it until you see is not that difficult.
