Good day all,
First of all, thank you very much for such a project.
It is 3 months since release of XBoard 4.9. Any chance to see WinBoard 4.9 for Windows? (I would love to play Chu Shogi).

And it comes with external bitmaps identical to the XBoard default piece set for all 66 pieces. So playing Chu Shogi would be no problem there. Of course when you would want to use traditional oriental graphics, you would have to supply your own set of external bitmaps.
The Alien Edition at http://hgm.nubati.net/WinBoard-Shogivars.zip does show 2-kanji tiles in one of its board sizes, though (and bare kanji or mnemonic pieces in others). So why not use that?
