Glaurung 1.0.1 (sigh)

There are few things which are more embarassing than working one and a half year on a program before finally releasing a 1.0 version, and then discover two elementary bugs less than 24 hours after the release. Sad to say, this is exactly what has happened with Glaurung 1.0. My excuse is that I really wanted to have the new version ready in time for the 12th edition of WBEC.

I now have a new version, 1.0.1, which fixes the following two bugs:
  • The default value of the "Static pruning depth" parameter is now 2, like it was supposed to be.
  • Glaurung now always uses a symmetric evaluation in analysis mode. This was also supposed to work in 1.0, but it didn't.

As an extra bonus, there is also one added future: A very simple form of positional learning (disabled by default). The point of this feature is not to increase the playing strength. Indeed, I think it has no measurable effect at all when playing games. The point is that it could be useful when using the program for interactive analysis. The feature is not very thoroughly tested, and I am not yet sure how well it works.

Those of you who have started running tests with Glaurung 1.0, don't bother to start all over (even if you used Static pruning depth = 1). Just replace 1.0 with 1.0.1, and let 1.0.1 keep the results and ratings of 1.0.

Source code and binaries for Linux and OS X can be found on my home page. A Windows binary will be added later.

I apologise for the inconvenience, and I hope that 1.0.1 will be the last Glaurung version for a while.

Hi all,

As some of you have probably noticed, a Windows binary (compiled by Dann Corbit) of Glaurung 1.0.1 has been available on my site since this morning. Those of you who wants to have the fastest possible executable may want to download again now: I have now replaced Dann's binary by one by Bryan Hoffman, which based on prior experience is likely to be a tiny bit faster. The Windows download now also contains two different 64-bit versions (Glaurung-AMD64.exe and Glaurung-EM64T.exe, I'm not sure what the difference is).

A big thanks to Dann and Bryan for their help!

The AMD64 is optimized for 64bit AMD systems and the EM64T is the 64bit Intel optimized compile. For the most part in my testing the compile for your platform will be a bit faster then the other.

i have a little question.
i'm a programmist but i am so young and not experienced - i compile Glaurung with gcc + full optimization and optainan exe file smaller and, i think, faster, than Corbit's or Abblet's compilations. Is it true?!

Hi Mike,

That your .exe file is smaller is not unexpected. I use GCC myself under Linux and Mac OS X, and the binaries I get are always much smaller than the Windows binaries by Bryan, Dann or Jim. My Linux binary is only about 80 KB big.

That your .exe file is faster is more surprising, and I am not sure I believe it until I see it confirmed by other. Most people claim that executables compiled with GCC are invariably slower than those compiled with the Microsoft or Intel compilers. This is all just based on reports by others, though. Being a Linux and Mac OS X user, I have never had the opportunity to test the differences myself.

Thanks for your test results! Looks remarkably good so far. :D

I did a Dev/GCC build just to see how close to my Intel builds I could make it. I inlined a lot of stuff by hand. The fastest build I could make was about 18-20% slower than Dann's or mine.

Yes, I understand. Perhaps you don't have Glaurung where you would like it to be but I think you are being extremely modest with your assessment of where it is at currently. From the results I've seen, Glaurung has the ability to surprise any engine at tournament controls -- and not a shabby blitzer either!

Well, I hope you will reconsider and give it a try. The hours shouldn't be horrible for Europe this year -- is Norway close to German time? If so, it shouldn't start later than 3pm and should end by 11pm or midnight.

An operator is also an option. However it's decided, it would be a privilege to see Glaurung play.

What time control was the match? I imagine Glaurung would do better at a longer time control.

When I get a break from HIARCS work I will see if I can come up with a set of openings that compliment Glaurung's style. From the relentless attacking I saw in the Shredder game, I have some ideas for it. 8-)

Perhaps, but I don't think so. Most people consider Glaurung to be a blitz specialist.

Thanks, that would be really cool! But first I will have to write a new opening book editor. The one I use now is only usable for experienced Lisp programmers.

And please don't take a too long break from Hiarcs work. Hiarcs is my favorite chess program, and I want it to continue improving. :D
