Help requested: FRC and winboard_x

Postby Marc Moisan » 07 Sep 2006, 10:19

Hi,

Let's make it simple: I use winboard_x (January 29 2006) and Polyglot 1.4 to play normal chess against Glaurung 1.2.1. Everything works well.

I add: /variant fischerandom at the Winboard startup dialog box. The pieces get shuffled but Glaurung doesn't recognize it is a FRC game; it claims an illegal move as soon as I do a move which departs from those possible from the normal chess piece setup.

What do I need to do to make it work? (do I need to edit the glaurung.ini file?)

Thank you,
Marc Moisan

Hi Marc,

You've told Winboard-X to start in FRC mode, but I guess you also have to tell Glaurung as well. The option 'UCI_Chess960 = false' is there if you go to 'Engines/configure in Arena, so I suppose in Winboard you have to add an extra entry to 'polyglot.ini' like below >

UCI_Chess960 = true.

Regards,
Jim.

No, the problem is that winboard_x doesn't send initial position, so Glaurung thinks int has to play from normal chess position. You can see it from Polyglot's log.

IIRC you need a special FRC compilation of WB_X,
but I never tried it.

Apparently a problem with the FRC support occured along the way - the readme file from Jan. 29 2006 indicates that FRC is supported. Can someone with a working version let me know?

Thank you!,

Marc

Hi Marc,

After some pondering I remembered this thread a few weeks ago:
http://wbforum.vpittlik.org/viewtopic.php?t=5337

It seems you either need to wait for Alessandro (I believe he is in
holidays?) or try to contact Richard or Milix, if they have a modified
working version.

Guenther

The functionality to select a random starting position does not function in winboard_x. You'll have to set up one manually, then it should work.

At least ... when you use Polyglot and a Shredder compatible UCI engine.
For native winboard engines you'll need some other changes as well. I sent them to Alessandro to include in his source, but I can provide you with a win32 or x64 build if you want.
I only fixed the winboard protocol stuff though.
Richard.

It indeed works when I load the position.

I'll be happy to have a w32 copy of your build and include The Baron in my tourneys!
