40H

40H is my package of 12 original pgn utility programs. Rather than release them individually, I decided to put them into one package for one download. All programs have been updated, and a couple of new ones added. Also there is one readme.txt and one summary spreadsheet.

The package can be downloaded from Jim Ablett's site:

http://homepages.tesco.net/henry.ablett/jims.html

Here is a quick summary of what each program does:

1. "cleanElo" removes existing elo tags in a pgn file.

2. "cleanUp" removes unnecessary tags in a pgn file.

3. "eloPgn" produces elo related statistics and (optionally) a new file of games from the original file, restricted to a maximum elo distance (difference) between the players.

4. "embed" inserts elo tags into a pgn file based upon elo values computed by "Elostat 1.3". The receiving file should not have pre-existing elo values.

5. "extract" produces a new file of games from the original file, restricted to the games of a player specified by the user. e.g. all games by "Rybka"

6. "minElo" produces a new file of games from the original file, restricted to the games where both players have elo ratings of at least a minimum elo rating, and (optionally) at most a maximum elo rating.

7. "minPly" produces a new file of games from the original file, restricted to the games that have played at least a minimum number of plies (half-moves), and (optionally) have played at most a maximum number of plies. "minPly" removes comments, nags and variations.

8. "nameChange" uses a text file listing names to be changed and their replacement names, to produce a new file with the changed names. It is useful for consolidating many variations of a name into one variation.

9. "nameList" produces a text file listing, in alphabetical order, all the players' names in the pgn file. Along side each name is the number of games played.

10. "split" produces four output files from the original pgn file. Each output file is distinct. The first has White wins only, the second has Black wins only, the third has Draws only and the fourth has "No result" games only.

11. "trim" removes "wrap-around moves" from the input pgn file. Each line of "trim's" output file has "full moves" only. "trim" also lets the user (optionally) choose the output width. The user can choose a width from 40 to 100. Default is 74 characters wide. "trim" removes comments, nags and variations.

12. "truncate" produces an output pgn file in which all plies (half-moves) beyond a user specified number of plies are deleted. Results are always outputted. "truncate" removes comments, nags and variations.
