Some engine requests

Postby Tony Thomas » 28 Nov 2006, 07:16

Hi all,
I am running a tournament similar to Leo's 5th division but at a much faster 1/1 time control with ponder off and less hash. I just found out today that I never did download the following engines. If someone have them, can you send them to me? I would really appreciate it. You can expect the same from me about any of the freeware engines.

Thanks
Tony

I forgot to mention my email address, its apocalypse1112@aol.com. Also, I do not know how to generate the random file that is needed to run Enigma, so if someone could please help me with that...

Oliver, thanks for sending me those files. You will probably receive NOW in few days from Mark. Also, I will let you know as soon as I download the random file...

Hi Tony,

Is NOW private? Just curious. It keeps thrashing Lime on the ICC.

You probably have heard of it. It was available years ago and author recently did a rewrite and its a UCI engine. The authors name is Mark Lefler, you probably have heard of him before. Yes, the engine is private and its about 150 points stronger than Lime I am afraid.

I doubt it will help Olivier much, as long as it still uses 50%
from opponents cpu with ponder = off.

Guenther

P.S. OTH I am quite sure meanwhile(after beta testing Loop)
I know what went wrong in NOW in my beta tests a half year
ago. It's quite simple and easy to solve :)
I've just sent Mark a mail...

Hi Guenther

I just got NOW, and it seems that this bug has been fixed :) It does not steal CPU anymore under Winboard and ponder off.

I bet I know what it was meanwhile ;-)
It simply was the missing minimal required UCI option
'Ponder' I guess.

Best regards,

I thought Oliver played with Ponder on, so it shouldnt bother him none right? Anyway, have you tried it under Arena as a UCI engine? I have had pretty much every version from 0.1a to y and I havent noticed this behaviour among any of those versions, I play with ponder off as well.

This is right, my tournaments are played with ponder on (only the promo tourney has ponder off). But I wanted to test it with ponder off as well, since I knew Guenther reported that problem.

It often happens that some engines steal CPU under Winboard, and don't under Arena. Tristram 4.16 is a good example.
