Fortress 1.62 exit

Postby Pablo » 04 Dec 2006, 04:27

Hello:
I have the quite old and last version of A. Damiani Fortress 1.62 engine. I must confess that for several years I did not play against it, nor against other engine. With surprise now is exiting from Winboard inmediately when I try to execute it.
My feeling is that my actual cygwin1.dll version in my PC is not compatible with Fortress 1.62.
I would greatly appreciate if somebody could inform me which is the correct cygwin1.dll version for Fortress.
Thanks,
Pablo

Cant you run it in windows 98 compatibility mode instead? It works fine for me without any changes, may be you should run it through dependency walker(I get to use my new Knowledge fast).

I am quite sure this has nothing to do with cygwin.
It runs here on two machines even with WB + newest cygwin.
Do you have the 4 necessary Af... files in its folder?

Well the versions of Fortress I have all need 4 binary
files starting with 'Af....' names(no extension).
If you mail me I can send them to you, but they are also
on Danns site, I just checked it.

Guenther

Hello Tony:
I think you hit the point. Maybe Fortress 1.62 only work with Winboard 98 or less. About 6 month ago I updated my OS from Window 98 to Windows 2000 and is why do not work now.
You mentioned to run a Windows98 compatibility mode and a dependency walker ???. Sorry for my ignorance but please explain how to run a windows98 compatibility mode and what is "dependency walker".
If you prefer to contact me by email mine is indech@ctcinterne.cl .
Best regards,
Pablo

Hello Günther:
Many thanks for your tips about the AF files.
I download the Dann Corbit Fortress with the 4 AF files. The version is 1.52, older than mine without opening book, but works OK at my PC.
If you read the quote of Tony Thomas he suggest Fortress 1.62 only works with Windows 98.

Fortress works fine on my windows XP as well, it is actually quiet strong for an engine so old, about 4th division strength in blitz without pondering. I have not tried Fortress on my computer with windows 2000 as it is quiet old(pentium 3 500MHZ). Since fortress is no longer available for download, I have to go to my other house and send it to my email and then download it, then I will let you know if it works.

No that's wrong, just put the Af files in your Fortress version
folder and it will work.
