A question to native English speakers

Postby Tord Romstad » 09 Sep 2007, 17:23

Hello,

Glaurung 2 will soon be ready for release, and I am working on small cosmetic details. My Position class contains the following functions:

Code: Select all
  Piece piece_at(Square s) const;
  PieceType type_of_piece_at(Square s) const;
  Color color_of_piece_at(Square s) const;

Should these functions be renamed into piece_on, type_of_piece_on and color_of_piece_on?

Tord,

Do you have an ETA for the newly polished Glaurung 2?

Hi Martin!

When I posted the first message in this thread, I expected to release it this week or early next week. Now, it looks like it will be a little later. One of the many tiny bug fixes and "harmless" cosmetic improvements I have made over the last week seems to have decreased the playing strength by 50-100 Elo points. I will need some time to figure out precisely which change it was that broke things, and to understand why it hurts the strength so much. Right now, I guess that 2.0 will be finished within one month, but I am not sure.

There is no reason to be very excited about Glaurung 2.0, though: It won't be much stronger than 2 - ε/5, and it won't contain everything I intended to include. I've decided to release it now because I realize that I won't have time to do everything I wanted any time in the near future.

Good luck Tord! Let me know if I can be of any help, I can always spare a core if you want me to try different builds.

Thanks for the offer, Martin!

Some help would be useful, but I'm afraid there's no practical way to do it. The turnaround is a bit too slow, because I can't compile Windows binaries myself. I would need a day or two to get each Windows binary I want to see tested, and a day or two is sufficient for me to do the necessary tests myself.
