Can anybody tell me why Crafty sometimes plays
(in a comp/comp-match) after 1.e4 the ugly 1...d5?
just to be out of book after 2.exd5 Qxd5 3.Nc3
I thought that Crafty would not play that way.
And a last question: does Crafty learn and if no
how can this be set in the crafty.rc?
Many thanks for your help.

This is a main line in the Scandinavian defense and I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I have no idea why it would be out of book at that point.

Hi Kurt,
For the second time I post my excellent crafty.rc for you!
Note the parameter "book width 5" and you'll get your answer about the length of the opening line!
Crafty updates it's opening book after every game and also has a positional learning!
If you have any questions, feel free to ask :-)

Hi,
I'm confused. Doesn't "cache 4M" set the egtb cache to 4M?
If that is the case, does "egtb 16M" override?

I do not know where you got the book.bin or bookc.bin, but using the ones from Hyatt's site it will not play ..d5 as it is marked as questionable (d5?). With the configuration you have it will only consider e5 or c5 using the deafult books from Hyatt's site.

Hi Norm,
No,it's ok to set "egtb 16M"!Why do you think that it will override! In my case I just want Crafty to fit in the 128M required in my tournaments!
As for Kurt,I am very surprised because this crafty.rc works fine for me!

Hello Kurt,
here is the text from the CRAFTY-DOC for learning
27. learn n controls the learning facilities in crafty.
Currently this is a 3-bit boolean switch, bit 1 (001) con-
trols book learning, bit 2 (010) controls position learning,
and bit 3 (100) controls result learning. learn=0 disables
all learning, learn=1 enables book learning only, learn=2
enables position learning only, and learn=4 enables result
learning. Add the values together to turn on more than one
type of learning (default=7 to enable everything).
ALL LEARNING iS EMABLED BY DEFAULT!!
Which books do you use for Crafty?

Hi Christian
Thanks very much for your prompt answer. What you wrote
is exactly what Robert Hyatt did in CCC. And as to the
Crafty book, I have the following files in the crafty
folder
book.bin
book.c
bookc.bin
books.bin
I have no idea what exactly this all means.

Not true. When you issue the COMPUTER command one of the things Crafty does is narrow the book selection. But in your .rc file you widen it back out. What happens is the first game will have the narrow selection, after the game is over and the new command is issued it will use the wider selection from the .rc file (note this will not happen under Winboard as Winboard issues the computer command at the begining of each game, thus over ridding what is in the .rc file). Note below that the 1st time d5 is marked as questionable but the 2nd time it is not.

The book.bin is 5,348 KB about half the size of the one you have. I would d/l all books at Hyatt's site to make sure you are playing with the ones he does.

Hi Brian
Oops ... I am no longer sure from where I got my big crafty books.
Anyway I have now downloaded the "correct" ones from Hyatt's site
and am going to replace them for our AT 2004 tourney. I very much
appreciate your help.

I remember I got exactly the same issue with Crafty books (the same size as you give above, 13mb etc). The best is to download them again from Hyatt's site.

Hi Olivier
Just funny that the same thing happened to you.
After using the fresh downloaded books from
Hyatt's site Crafty is not out of book after
1.e4 d5 2.exd5 Qxd5 3.Nc3 and plays 3...Qa5.

I think your book was from Peter Skinner's site.
I do not know where you got the book.bin or bookc.bin, but using the ones from Hyatt's site it will not play ..d5 as it is marked as questionable (d5?). With the configuration you have it will only consider e5 or c5 using the deafult books from Hyatt's site.
