Styles myApple and subRebel removed

Postby Volker Pittlik » 09 Mar 2006, 14:13

Some of you may have noticed that the forum is displayed different. I have removed all board styles except subSilver.

Reasons: each style doubles my ammount of work in case of updates. Additional to the normal update I have to do the update in each style. When that is done all the mods have to be installed in each style and sometimes even in different languages!

As only the subSilver styles is the one which is supported by phpBB and includes always the newest security features I have disabled the other styles. The same will happen to unused languages soon.

If someone has really problems to read the forum we can try to create a theme for the existing style. That would have the advantage that there are no separate updates necessary.

You've probably addressed this already, but would it be possible to add the option for threaded view?

this ?wide? screen format is really annoying on a 800x600 display - please make a smaller format available again!

Sorry Franz, I evaluate security more important than the individial comfort in this point. I've just tested it and have to say that the comfort is limited, but the forum is usable.

Therefore another attempt for a smaller format has to wait. Are you willing to help me? It will not be done at one evening.

One question: 1024*768 pixel are standard for a long time. AFAIK all monitors at work have to be able to display it by law for a long time. Have you ever thought about updating your hardware? Flatscreens are cheap, don't annoy you with radiation and are a pleasure for the eyes :-).

Not all of us want the browser window to fill the whole screen, you know. Very long lines of text makes reading slower and more tiresome, because the eyes have to jump back too far at the end of each line. There is a good reason why newspapers are printed in columns.

I read this on a 1680x1024 display, but I still think the new forum layout is very annoying. With my normal browser window size, I have to scroll horizontally in order to read.

Well, I have a flatscreen in my notebook here, which I?m using for the internet, but it?s more than 5 years old, and 800x600 were standard at this time.
But almost all internet sites are still using this smaller format - and it has worked now in this WB-forum since it started, so why this change? :(

Franz.

As I wrote before:

- each style doubles my effort for updates

If I spend half an hour to update from version x.y to x.y+1 I have to work
for one and a half hour because everything have to done for subSilver, subRebel and myApple.

Often an update makes it necessary to reinstall the mods to. For example the diagram mod and some security and backup mods running in this forum. Almost all of this mods have to be installed in each style. Therfore there is not three times but 12 times as much work for me for a simple update. To make it worse some mods need update of language files too what would need even more effort.

Some mods don't work with a tool I use for modding so updating has to be done manually. As you surely can imagine inserting hundrets of lines of code in dozens of positions in various files can easily introduce errors (what happens twice today for example).

I'm going to install the MobyThread mod. That one is even more complicated as all mods already existing together. How long should I work on an update, 48 hours?

The only solution I see is to create a theme for the subSilver style. it is a change based upon the existing style and may enable you to read the forum in a comfortable way. The advantage is that only one style would be installed. The theme is just a different view on the forum with no need for seperate nstallation files. No seperate updates would be necessary.

The only problem is I can't do it alone. I can read the forum pretty well and I like subSilver. So if you are really interested please accept my invitation and I will enable you to create a theme which is appropiate for you. This invitation is valid for everyone.

Of course - no problem at all! :)

If I get detailled informations, how to create such a theme, I?d like to try it ...

Hallo Volker,

Gr??e,
Franz.

Super, jetzt pa?t?s wieder - vielen Dank! :D
